A Beginner's Guide to Paging Staff

Ok...so you're stuck...or in trouble...and you need to page a staff member.
Here's a couple of basic tips that will help. (This guide was prompted by the 1,246
pages I received in the first 10 minutes when I log on.)
-
Ask what you need in the initial page.
While it's very polite to page and ask "Can I ask you
something?" or "Hi, got a sec?" it only makes for more delay
while we call back and respond...then wait for the question...then respond
again. State your request right off the bat.
As a follow up to that, if you are told no, the conversation is over.
Calling back with "StafferX always does it for me", or "Awwww,
come on...please?" only further fills our screens with text, and
lessens your chances even more.
-
Don't spam if you don't get an immediate answer
I can only speak for myself, but response times vary from immediate to
about 30 minutes, depending on how busy I am. I ignore all spam pages, so
you're only hurting yourself.
-
Don't page and log off two minutes later, or have afk on.
Pages are answered in order. If I can't get you when I call back,
you go to the bottom of the list.
-
Never page for a trade unless your are absolutely ready to make the deal.
Trades take up way too much of our time as it is. Don't expect us to
hang around while you run to the bank, or finish negotiations with the other
party.
-
(a personal favorite) Do not page back pouting if you don't get an immediate response.
"Thanks for nothing," or "You're ignoring
me," or other more unpleasant comments will guarantee I won't
call back.
-
Do NOT page saying it's urgent if it isn't.
I have been pulled away from important things for players paging that
it's life or death, and they needed a trade moderated, or had a question.
(see number 1)
-
Do not page every available staffer for the same problem immediately.
Allow a little time for a response first before paging someone else.
Several times I've shown up to find two other staff members already called
in. It's a large waste of at least two people's time.
Finally...for a personal list to eliminate a lot of pages I get daily....
I do not spawn monsters.
I can not brill your item.
I do not buy or sell items, or know ppl that have a jstaff for sale.
I will not warp (especially higher level players) unless it's a VERY good
reason.
I will not warp to you for heals, boires, nouritus, etc.
I will not kill the evil PK's that just killed you.
Also, depending on who you are paging, many times it's something that
particular staff member can't help with. If you are told that it's an admin
problem, your only course of action is to e-mail abuse@realmsofkaos.com.
And yes, before everyone responds to that, it can take a long time to get some
things resolved. Our admins are swamped; they can only work through things so
fast. Patience is not only a virtue...but a necessity.
Having said all that, don't be afraid to page sometimes just to say hello. While
I listed a lot of negative things above, we are here to help when we can, and a
pleasant word, or a "How are you?" will never make us mad.
Well, not me anyway, some other staff members are mean. *grin*
